Oi  gente!

1) When did you realize you wanted to be a writer? And where did this passion?

I never considered being a writer until I was in my late twenties. I’d always wanted to be an actor—I went to school to study theater. But then I was laid off from my job when the economy collapsed in 2008 and I had a lot of time on my hands. I’d always wanted to try writing a YA fantasy novel, so I did (spoiler alert: it was terrible). That project got me into graduate school, which is where I ultimately ended up writing The Jewel!
2) What are your inspirations to write? Has any author as a reference?
2) Quais são suas inspirações para escrever? Tem algum autor como referência?
Inspiration comes from the strangest places. The Jewel was inspired by the movie Taken, if you can believe it! As for authors that have influenced me, Roald Dahl and Louisa May Alcott in my childhood and Tolkien in my teenage years. I am a huge LOTR nerd.
Quanto a autores, Roald Dahl e Louisa May Alcott me influenciaram na minha infância e Tolkien na minha adolescência.
3) Where the Violet characters, Raven and Ash came? Are inspired by someone close to you?
Absolutely none of my characters are based on real people! Because to me, they are already their own people, and I just get the privilege of peeking into their lives. Violet and I share some similar qualities—we are both stubborn and I did play the cello when I was in grade school. Though she is much better at it than I ever was!
4) Can you imagine “The Jewel” turning movie or a TV series? If so, can you imagine your ideal cast? Have you ever thought about it? Received any proposals?
Recebeu alguma proposta?
I would love it if The Jewel could be turned into a film. Those dresses! The palaces! It would be incredible to see the opulence realized. I do have a film agent, but I’m honestly not involved in that process at all. As for my ideal cast…I only have a few characters that I’m die hard about. Lucy Liu has always been the Duchess for me. And Paul Wesley was the physical basis for Ash. I would love Benedict Cumberbatch for Lucien and Saoirse Ronan for Annabelle. But I have no idea about who would play Violet!
Aqueles vestidos! Os palácios! Seria incrível ver a opulência realizada.
5) What can we expect from “The White Rose”?
You can expect to learn a lot more about the other circles of the city! And meet some exciting new characters. Other than that, my lips are zipped.

E conhecer alguns novos e interessantes personagens. Fora isso, os meus lábios estão fechados.

6) Do you know if “The Wishing Well” and “The House of the Stone” will be released Also here?
6) Você sabe se “The Wishing Well” e “The House of the Stone” (contos da série) serão lançados aqui também?
The Wishing Well you can find online! (here). Though it hasn’t been translated 🙁 As for the House of the Stone, I’m not sure, but I certainly hope so!
Você pode encontrar The Wishing Well online! (aqui) Embora não tenha sido traduzido 🙁 Quanto a The House of the Stone, eu não tenho certeza, mas eu certamente espero que sim!
7) The last book of the trilogy already have a name? In fact it will only be a trilogy or can we expect a series?
The last book DOES have a name, which I am sitting on until my editor gives me the green light to reveal it. That book is in very early stages right now. And yes, this is just a trilogy! But there will be another novella released between books 2 and 3.
8) Writing a book is hard work. How was writing and creating a dystopia? How create another reality of society?
It is really hard work! But also incredibly fun. I love creating societies that differ from our own, switching gender roles and dealing with issues like ownership over one’s own body. It’s fun to make up your own rules, but then the tricky part is, you have to follow them. Your society has to make sense. So there can be a lot of leg work that never makes it into the actual book, things that I know about the Lone City that might not be so important to Violet’s story, but are important to the world as a whole.
9) What was it like seeing your work make the world and delight so many fans?
It’s just about the most incredible feeling in the history of feelings. Really. You spend so much time in private working on your imaginary world and your imaginary friends, and sharing them with strangers is so scary. But when people engage with the book and reach out to tell me how much they enjoyed it…there really is nothing better.
10) Are you writing anything new? What are your plans for the future?
10) Você está escrevendo alguma coisa nova? Quais são seus planos para o futuro?
I have two new projects in the works—one is a collaboration with my good friend and fellow writer and the other is a brand new fantasy series. Both are still in development stages, so nothing is official yet. But I’m super excited about them both!
11) Finally, leave a message for your Brazilian fans!
